3D scan & CAD design: engineering for your manufacturing

Our 3D scanning service in Kiel offers professional engineering solutions for demanding 3D printing projects. If you're unsure how to proceed: we check geometry, material, method, and feasibility so that your prototype doesn't just get „printed“, but becomes functional.

To bring ideas to life

You need our services if you hold responsibility internally and ultimately have to stand by a decision.

Typical problems

You have CAD, but no process safety.

You want a quick, resilient solution before you waste time.

What wall thickness, what orientation, what rework to make it hold?

You have an idea, but no finished design yet.

You want arguments, limitations, and a clear recommendation.

DFM-Check

Design for Manufacture

We find the stumbling blocks before they become serial.
A prototype can work „somehow“. In reality, projects often fail due to details: fits, warping, support structures, assembly, rework.

What we typically check:

Prototyping

Do you want to quickly know if a concept really works? That's exactly what we make prototypes for, which dimensionally stable, robust and practical depending on the objective (shape, function, appearance or load) we choose the appropriate process: FDM, SLA or SLS. If it makes sense, we will supplement this with CO₂ laser cutting or our 3-axis CNC milling machine, for example for flat reference surfaces, fitting seats or clean edges.

Reverse Engineering

If the part is there but the data is missing.
You have an existing component, spare part or sample, but no CAD? Then we can rebuild usable data from the real part as a basis for manufacturing, modification or optimisation.

Typical reasons:

Topology optimisation

Topology optimisation

If weight, material usage or installation space are critical, a smart step before manufacturing is worthwhile. We analyse where your component really bears loads. This results in geometries that lighter, stiffer or more efficient are, without losing functionality. This often not only reduces weight, but also Cost, Print time and Post-processing.

Obtain components that can be realistically manufactured, assembled, and reproducibly procured.

3D Scan Service

3D Scan Service, when you need to get to the geometry quickly.

This is how it works:

Important: Not everything needs to be 0.01 mm
Often, clean, functional accuracy is sufficient for the purpose. This is precisely what we clarify beforehand.

Model making

Good models explain faster than any presentation. Get precise, high-quality results for design studies, functional prototypes and complex assemblies. Whether delicate details or larger dimensions: we'll advise you on the right resolution, material choice and finish. This way, you'll get a model that builds trust.

Frequently Asked Questions about 3D Scanning and Engineering

Digitalisation, reverse engineering and manufacturing consultancy – the questions that arise before every project.

How much does a 3D scanning service cost?

The price depends on the component size, required accuracy and the desired outcome. A simple scan for form capture is significantly cheaper than a fully parametrically rebuilt CAD model. Not every part needs to be accurate to 0.01 mm – often functional accuracy is completely sufficient for the purpose. We clarify exactly that beforehand, so you don't pay for precision you don't need. Send us the component or photos with dimensions, and you'll receive a reliable estimate.

Was ist Reverse Engineering im 3D-Druck?

Reverse Engineering means: usable design data is created again from an existing physical component. A typical case in mechanical engineering: a spare part exists, but the drawing is missing or the supplier is gone. Mach-3D digitises the part using a 3D scan and creates CAD data from it – as a basis for redevelopment, modification or optimisation. Variants are also possible with this, for example, a different connection dimension with the same function.

What is checked during manufacturing consulting?

During Design for Manufacturing (DFM) checks, we review your component before production: critical dimensions and tolerances, wall thicknesses and warping risk, geometries that unnecessarily create support material, surface requirements in relation to the process, assembly features such as threads and fits, and series production capability. The aim is to find pitfalls before they go into mass production – fitting issues, warping, rework.

A topology optimisation is worthwhile when you want to improve the performance of a component by reducing its weight or increasing its stiffness. It's particularly useful in design processes where you need to find the most efficient material distribution for a specific load case.

Whenever weight, material usage, or space are critical. We analyse where your component actually bears loads, and from this derive a geometry that is lighter, stiffer or more efficient – without losing functionality. This often reduces manufacturing costs as well as weight, because less material is printed.

Does Mach-3D work throughout Germany?

Yes. Components can be sent in, and data and quotes are handled digitally. The company is based in Altenholz near Kiel, and works for clients across Germany – from individual parts to small production runs. For projects in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg, an on-site appointment is also possible.

Will I get usable CAD data from the scan?

Yes. Depending on requirements, the scan data can be used to create a surface model or a parametric CAD model that can be further processed. The difference is important: a pure mesh shows the shape but is difficult to change. A parametric model can be adapted, dimensioned, and used as a basis for manufacturing.
