Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is your 3D scan?

Depending on the technology used and component size, we achieve accuracies of ±0.1 mm to ±0.02 mm. For standard reverse engineering, ±0.05 mm is sufficient; for quality control in series production, we use photogrammetric reference markers and achieve ±0.02 mm. Our customers from the Kiel shipbuilding industry and maritime mechanical engineering use this precision for inventory documentation and spare part reconstruction. We clarify the optimal method free of charge in a brief consultation.

What are the maximum dimensions for the component?

We scan components ranging from a few centimetres (e.g. gears, implants, small housings) to several metres in length (ship components, industrial constructions, vehicle bodies). For very large objects, we combine multiple scan positions using reference point registration to create an exact overall model. In Northern Germany, we have documented, among other things, large maritime components and plant parts from the Kiel Fjord region. There is no fixed upper size limit.

Can I send the component in?

Yes, you can send the component to our site in Kiel by parcel. We will scan it within 1-2 working days and send it back to you along with the finished files. For sensitive, heavy, or installed components, we can also come to you directly – whether you're in Kiel, Hamburg, Lübeck, Rendsburg, or Flensburg. Customers from Schleswig-Holstein's defence industry regularly use our on-site scanning service when components are not allowed to leave the site for security reasons.

How long does a scan project take?

We deliver simple components within 1–2 working days of receipt. Reverse engineering to a parametric CAD model takes 3–7 working days, depending on complexity. For machine parks or multiple components simultaneously, we offer package prices and prioritised processing. Express delivery within 24 hours is available on request – used by development teams in Kiel and Hamburg who need to validate last-minute design changes.

Do you also supply parametric CAD models?

Yes, upon request, we create a fully parametric STEP model from the scan, which can be further processed directly in SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX, Fusion 360, or Creo. The difference to a pure mesh: the parametric model has clean geometry, editable dimensions, and is versionable. Especially for customers from mechanical engineering and medical technology in Schleswig-Holstein, this is the crucial step from as-built documentation to an active design basis.

3D Scan Kiel: from component to CAD model

3D scanning in Kiel with Mach-3D means: components are digitised with an accuracy of up to ±0.02 mm – for reverse engineering, quality inspection or spare part reconstruction.

Following the 3D scan in Kiel, you can optionally receive a parametric STEP model that can be directly further processed. We then manufacture the scanned part in the 3D printing contract manufacturing. The basics of this are taught in Mach-3D Academy.
